The Designed Edge

What Nobody Teaches After Dental School

Clinical philosophy, practice wisdom, and honest answers — for patients and the dentists who treat them.

The courses gave you tools.
Nobody gave you the operating system.

Think differently about dentistry.

Dentistry has no shortage of clinical education. What it lacks is a philosophy of practice — a way of thinking about the career itself, not just the procedures inside it. The Designed Edge is an independent publication exploring that gap: the space between technical competence and clinical wisdom, between passing boards and knowing who you are in the operatory.

This is writing for dentists who've done the CE, bought the binders, and still feel the fog. It's also for patients who want to understand the thinking — not just the treatment — behind great dental care. Whether the subject is TMJ, airway, orofacial pain, or the philosophy of a meaningful clinical life, every piece starts from the same question: what does it actually mean to practice well?

New essays and reflections are published regularly. Subscribe to receive them directly — no algorithms, no noise, just the writing.

Areas of focus

Clinical Philosophy

The thinking behind clinical decisions — not protocols, but the judgment that protocols can't capture. Why you chose what you chose, and whether it was right.

TMJ & Orofacial Pain

Two decades of specialty practice distilled into plain language. What your patients need to understand, and what most dentists were never taught.

Airway & Sleep

The intersection of dentistry and breathing — a frontier most practitioners know matters but few feel confident navigating.

Practice Wisdom

The career arc nobody talks about: from bright-eyed graduate to seasoned practitioner, and the fog that settles in between.

The Designed Life

Dentistry as a vehicle for a meaningful life — not just a living. Semi-retirement, autonomy, craft, and the question of what "enough" looks like.

For Patients

Honest, jargon-free explanations of what's happening in your mouth and why your dentist recommends what they recommend.

He practices at Highlands Dentistry in Issaquah, Washington, and is the founder of BrushUp Health, a workforce education platform for dental professionals. The Designed Edge is where he writes about the philosophy behind the practice.
